In het begin van de jaren 1840, wordt de jonge Karl Marx zo goed als weggejaagd uit zijn Pruisische provincie. Hij trekt samen met zijn jonge vrouw Jenny naar Parijs. Daar leert hij al snel de jonge excentriekeling, Friedrich Engels kennen. Met z'n drietjes trekken ze van Parijs tot Manchester en Brussel en veranderen ze gaandeweg de gevestigde orde van de revolutionaire bewegingen.
